Digital Den

digital denI attended the Digital Den community day in Meole Brace recently which brought together more than 300 residents across Shrewsbury attended a family community day, aimed at fostering community spirit and celebrating 3,500 visitors to the town’s first Digital Den.

Those attending met Shrewsbury Town footballer Tom Bradshaw, visited a play bus and took part in free craft sessions for the kids and pamper sessions by Carnelian Hair and Beauty for parents.

The event, which took place on Maesbrook Road in the heart of the Meole Estate, was held to celebrate the Community of Meole and to acknowledge the success of the Digital Den facility. Since launching six months ago, the facility has attracted an increasing number of visitors of all ages and the occasion was marked by an official cake cutting by myself.

The Digital Den is a project at the heart of the Meole Estate offering affordable access to home broadband as well as huge savings on telephone calls and computer equipment.

Set up in partnership with Social Telecoms, a local Community Interest Company, the Den provides affordable access to Wi-Fi services on a contract-free basis, as well as affordable refurbished computer equipment for sale.

It provides cyber-café style facilities with free internet access – enabling residents to get online to make claims, search for jobs, or make savings through online shopping.

Visitor numbers to the Den are rising monthly, with new sessions including a Job Club for those seeking work or wanting a career change, a homework club for school kids without computer access at home and housing advice drop ins.

Susan Dell, community development manager at Severnside, said: “The event was a great success and it was lovely to see so many people enjoying themselves and finding out more about what their community has to offer.

“The Digital Den is proving to be exceptionally popular and we are delighted to be able to celebrate its success with the wider community.”

One of our key objectives is to contribute to the development of sustainable, thriving communities, and it is through events such as this that we are able to see the reality of that.”

Thank you so much to everyone who attended and to our partners who helped to make the day such a brilliant event.”
